Writing is the easy part, but promoting my books has taken me out of my comfort zone
@EclecticTalesOfficial on YouTube has been running for some time now, have you checked it out yet?
There are times in life when we have to try something new. If you’ve read my other blogs, you’ll know that my technical skills are very much supported by those around me. Starting a YouTube channel was definitely not a thought in my head when I started writing. In fact, as many self-published writers seem to say, the writing actually became the easy part, because all the hard work comes afterwards.
Most people write because they have a story (personal or imagined) that they want to share, or they have gained knowledge that they want to impart. Most writers don’t think about book promotion, advertising, reader subscriptions, websites, blogs or newsletters etc. when starting their journey into authorship!
Most of us learn the hard way and muddle our way through until we find what works for us. For me, with no social media profile at all at the beginning, I started with Reddit. However, me being me, I jumped in feet first and created a subreddit to promote my books, but also to share with other self-published authors that needed a voice in the vastness of the internet. Then I ventured into YouTube Shorts, before taking a leap into Instagram. This is enough for me for now, but I have signed into Substack to follow another author, and I am looking at it in some form as a possible project for the future.
In the meantime, you will find 12 of my 13 books so far made into Shorts on YouTube @EclecticTalesOfficial. I’m an amateur, but that’s my voice you can hear on each of them. My online identity is Eclectic Tales®, but I decided that even if you can’t see what I look like until I choose otherwise, I would lend my voice to these book teasers. The Short for ‘Pure of Heart’ is definitely a family affair. My wonderful hand model with the beautiful nails is a member of my family, and the music was written and performed by my Dad, Ray Liffen, the author of the short stories in ‘Shaggy Dog Stories, Spoonerisms & Silliness’. If you haven’t read it yet, my introduction describes his love for creating and performing music individually and in bands.
At the time of writing this blog, I can reveal that there is something new coming to my YouTube channel thanks to a generous friend. TownSecretsOriginals is an anime creator from across the globe with not only a YouTube channel, but Instagram and Facebook pages too. She has kindly offered to create Reels for advertising my books. Her style is very eye-catching and I am very excited to see my stories imagined from a different perspective.
I’m really looking forward to this new content, and I will be continuing to create my own content too, so hopefully I can find that sweet spot in YouTube’s algorithm! If you like what you see, or you have any feedback, I invite you to subscribe, like and comment.
