Taking time to explore different mediums of artistic expression

It’s been a busy month! There always seems to be something to distract me from the things I’d love to do. However, I found time for a few pieces of art in different mediums which was a lovely break from the endless to do list.
Unfortunately, the CalmFire trilogy that I’m writing has taken a back seat while I’ve been busy. With this in mind, I have to revise my own timings; and rather than rush through, the first part of the trilogy will now be out next year. I am okay with this. I am enjoying the way the story is unfolding, and I don’t want there to be any plot holes in this first book or the subsequent ones.
     I promised you some art…
Please bear in mind that I am so much better at creating cakes and painting icing with food colouring, but here are three of my attempts to have a go at different mediums.
After my acrylic painting in last month’s blog, I thought I’d try acrylic markers. I can see their use in creating bold and stylised designs and so I thought that nature lends itself to this. I decided to try my lotus flower design that I use for my online picture. Pink seemed a good choice as a bold colour (and who doesn’t like ‘a bit more pink?’).
I used coloured pencils for the background to emphasise the boldness of the design, and I think my mistake was using a small canvas rather than flat paper, but lesson learnt.
I amalgamated several techniques from different online tutorials and I found that I liked the way each colour worked well over the top of another, but I didn’t like the way they didn’t blend well
. I think I will use them again to add bold detail to a design, but maybe not for a whole picture.

Watching the tutorials, I love the ones that make 2D drawings look 3D. The simplest design I could find was bubbles, and the white on black ones looked so effective. So here is just white pencil on black paper. This was fun to draw and didn’t take me very long at all.

Thirdly for this month, it was time for a watercolour. I did try to do a detailed autumn tree painting based on photographs of places I’d visited, but I got halfway through & I’ll be honest, it looked like a 5 year old had painted it!
I then saw other tutorials where they soaked the back of the paper first (to stop it curling), and then the front so that when you added colour is seeped softly with the flow of the water.
With such a gentle, softer look, I decided to keep to the autumn theme and do a lone tree with its reflection in the water in the foreground
. I think this style suits me better than detailed watercolour, so I will be exploring this technique further.

I really enjoyed these moments, so…
